HP 9000 Memory Modules

Overview

There are different types of memory PA-RISC workstations and servers use:

  1. Proprietary boards. Used by the early HP 9000/700s workstations and older servers. Boards are interchangable, i.e. these machines can use any of these boards.
  2. Old 72-pin ECC SIMMs. Used almost throughout the whole line of numbered 700s workstations and several servers. Should also be interchangeable, some incompatibilities could occur though.
  3. Newer 72-pin ECC SIMMs. Used by the newer, lettered workstations. Basically same as the above but with shorter cycle-times (60, 50ns). Interchangeable but some machines (with PA-8x00 CPU) need the faster 50ns modules.
  4. Some of the much newer machines use special kinds of DIMM modules, proprietary to these systems.

On a side note relating the 72-pin SIMMs: these are not compatible with other popular workstations as for example SGI, DEC Alpha or even PCs. These HP ECC SIMMs only work in HP 9000 PA-RISC systems (and some Laserjets printers) and, probably, not in any other computer. Alas, 72-pin (36-bit parity) SIMMs that may work in PCs or in one of the above mentioned workstations will not work in HP 9000 systems.

Although all of these boards would fit electronically some are a bit too tall to fit in the desktop 700s, namely 720, 730 and 735.

705 and 710 use different, even older 72-pin SIMMs which mostly don't work in any other HP 9000. (Modules from e.g., 712 or 715 won't work in the 705/710 neither):
